Police officer rocked with cheap shot punch to the face

Shocking CCTV footage has emerged showing the moment a police officer was rocked with a ‘cheap shot’ punch to the face.

Ryan Mitchell Tarran, 28, was sentenced to one year and nine months in prison for the sickening attack at the Rockhampton Magistrates Court on Monday, according to the Courier Mail.

Tarran was being escorted from the courtroom in Rockhampton, Queensland to the watch house by police officer Nathan Tam in August when the assault occurred.

Footage shows the pair interacting before suddenly Tarran lunges at the officer, connecting with a punch and sending Mr Tam sprawling to the ground.

Tarran then quickly approaches to deliver another blow but Mr Tam regains his footing just in time and dodges the attack.

Following the fracas police prosecutor Sergeant Shaun James rushed into the room and the two policemen manage to restrain the attacker.

Mr Tam had to be taken to hospital following the assault for treatment of swelling to the inside of his lips and an injury to his ear.

Tarran pleaded guilty to 13 charges, and was sentenced to one year and nine months in prison.

He will be eligible for parole in May next year.
