An earthquake near the Iran-Iraq border has killed at least 170, and the toll is rising

An earthquake epicentered close to the Iran-Iraq border has killed at least 170 people so far and injured more than 1,500, according to the news wire service Agence France-Presse, citing a local official.

The toll has risen rapidly as rescue efforts continue.

The US Geological Survey said the 7.3-magnitude quake occurred shortly before 10pm local time on Sunday (Nov. 12), and put its epicenter in an area of Iran that is some 32 km (20 miles) southwest of the Iraqi city of Halabjah.

AP, citing Iran’s IRNA state-run news agency, put the magnitude at 7.2.

In 2003, the earthquake in Bam, Iran, killed over 25,000 people.
