Queen Maxima wore over-sized burgundy hat in The Hague

The Dutch royal, 46, looked striking in a monochrome burgundy ensemble as attended the opening of a new travelling exhibition, Top Ten on Tour.

Queen Maxima of the Netherlands is known for her bold wardrobe choices and today was no exception as she visited an art gallery in the Hague.

Taking a sartorial risk, the mother-of-three paired a wide-brimmed wine-coloured hat with a fitted red lace mini dress and co-ordinating heels for the occasion.

Keeping to the colour scheme, Maxima accessorised with a red leather clutch bag and carried a pair of leather gloves in the same shade.

Her long blonde hair was pulled back under her hat in a sleek updo to reveal heavy gem stone drop earrings in pink and contrasting green.

The royal, who is married to King Willem-Alexander, expertly navigated the cobbled street in her thin-heeleed suede shoes as she teetered into the gallery.

Maxima sported a natural glow and added a soft pink lipstick so not to overpower the outfit.

She spent time meeting staff and posed for photos with some of the artwork in the exhibition.

Máxima was born in Argentina and married into the Dutch royal family in 2002, three years after meeting her husband-to-be in Seville, Spain.

Despite reportedly having no inkling that Willem-Alexander was heir to the throne when the pair first met, she eventually became Queen consort when her husband ascended to the throne.

Willem-Alexander became king after his mother, Beatrix, abdicated in April 2013 after 33 years as reigning monarch.
