Throwback Thursday: Advertising Costume Jewelry in the 20’s

Brianna Glenn, September 22, 2017

Costume jewelry made up almost all of the jewelry advertisements in our April 1928 issue, with dozens of companies advertising their “colorful” and “beautiful in design” jewelry pieces.

What is costume jewelry? Merriam Webster dictionary defines it as “jewelry designed for wear with current fashions and usually made of inexpensive materials.” Costume jewelry made its debut in the 1920’s. After the second world war, women stopped wearing such flashy designs and the demand for these pieces went down. Take a look at these costume jewelry advertisements in Gifts and Dec’s April 1928 issue.
