Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order Release Date Announced

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order, the next entry in the long-running Marvel Ultimate Alliance series, finally has a fixed release date: July 19.

The date was pushed back slightly from the general timeframe given during February’s Nintendo Direct, which was June 2019.

As reported when the game was first announced during last year’s Game Awards, Ultimate Alliance 3 will be a Nintendo Switch exclusive.

Ultimate Alliance 3 sees players take control of a wide range of Marvel heroes, including Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel), in a bid to stop Thanos and the titular Black Order from obtaining the enigmatic Infinity Stones. This journey will take players through many familiar locations pulled from the various Marvel universes, including the X-Mansion.

It’s an entry many thought might never happen, coming as it does a full decade after the second Marvel Ultimate Alliance game. That game multi-platform and published by Activision. Ultimate Alliance 3 is developed by Team Ninja, the studio best known for games like Dead or Alive and Nioh; Nintendo is handling the publishing.

The dev team’s action-based history shows through in the general gameplay. Frenetic combat is the main focus, and each hero has their own regular attacks, combos, and devastating special attacks, called Alliance Attacks, they can unleash on their foes.

The emphasis is on combining each hero’s skills to create new, different attacks, and, in keeping with such a theme, Ultimate Alliance 3 supports 4-player multiplayer via local connections or wireless.

The July 19 release date is only a few months after another highly anticipated Marvel media effort – Avengers: Endgame – which includes many of the same characters featured in Ultimate Alliance 3.

Between the film, the game, and the recent re-packaging of the Lego Marvel Super Heroes and Lego Marvel Avengers games for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, it’s shaping up to be a big year for Marvel fans.
