The immigration crisis will deprive Germany of the Chancellor?

Opponents of the compromise, the conservative bloc of Chancellor Angela Merkel, has put forward the leader of the German ultimatum to toughen asylum rules, otherwise there is a risk to plunge the country into political crisis.

Three years later, after the decision of the Chancellor to open Germany’s borders to migrants fleeing war and poverty in Syria and Iraq, Merkel is still trying to find a solution that would put an end to the grumbling of her Bavarian allies, the CSU (Christian social soy), as part of the German liberal policy for refugees.

Monday is a “fateful day for Angela Merkel, for the government,” printed mass circulation newspaper Bild on Sunday.

The Minister of internal Affairs, Horst Seehofer of the CSU, was one of the fiercest critics of the liberal position Merkel, who allowed millions of refugees to Germany in 2015.

Now, the Minister of internal Affairs wants to close the borders to new arrivals, which were previously registered in other EU countries, often their first stop is Italy, or Greece.

But Merkel opposes this, arguing that it will force countries in southern Europe to cope with the influx of migrants.

Instead, she wants to find a common European solution at the EU summit on June 28-29.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel agreed, with the condition of the interior Minister Horst Seehofer in a dispute on the issue of combating illegal migration. Moreover, the parties announced the agreement of a plan, the contents of which will be known only after the EU summit.

Fears about a mass influx of migrants, given the populist and anti-immigration forces growth in several European countries, including Italy and Austria, where right-wing parties now share power.

In Germany, voters showed Merkel, it is the lowest result in the September elections, for the first time, giving votes for far-right anti-Islamic AfD (Alternative for Germany).

Several crimes of migrants, including an attack on a Christmas market in 2016, the recent murder and rape of a teenage girl, presumably the Iraqis also helped to incite anger.

The case with the German teenager, who is believed to have been killed in the supermarket it another Afghan asylum seekers will be heard in court on Monday.

Watching the October elections in Bavaria, the CSU seeks to reassure voters that he has a road map to curb the influx of migrants.

“The master plan” Seehofer immigration had become a model for the tough stance of the CSU for new arrivals of refugees.

But the Minister of internal Affairs, was forced to cancel a scheduled presentation, after Merkel did not agree with his proposal not to allow some asylum-seekers, calling last week because of this discord. With all the noise, the CSU knows that there is more at stake.

Seehofer sounded more conciliatory when he said that “in the interests of the CSU is not worth the overthrow of the Chancellor and the dissolution of the Union. We just want to find the exact solution of sending refugees back over the border.”

Representatives Seehofer supposed to meet on Monday to decide what course to follow.

He has a nuclear solution to the immediate closure of the borders of Germany, against the wishes of Merkel or less aggressive way to put her an ultimatum of two weeks to deal with other EU countries.

Stating that inclined to the latter option, Seehofer wrote in a column in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that “it is important that the EU summit took the decision at the end of June. The situation is serious, but solvable”. Whichever option he chose, everything will be decided in the court of Merkel.

The party split

The act of rebellion from Seehofer, may force the Chancellor to dismiss him, and this “will be the end of his government and the Union between the CDU and CSU,” said Belder.

If Merkel will deliver an ultimatum to two weeks, it will still be a problem to convince the EU government to sign the General plan of migrants.
Central and Eastern EU countries, such as Hungary and Poland, either directly refused or resisted the acceptance of refugees through the quota system of the EU.

The government, which is in Italy and the ruling conservative party government in neighbouring Austria has also taken an uncompromising stance against immigration.

Despite the howls of protests from aid groups and even the United Nations, Rome forbade to land rescue ships transporting migrants.

Merkel’s talks, on Monday evening, with Prime Minister of Italy, Giuseppe Conte can make all the difference, perhaps it will have a chance to reach agreement in Brussels. On Tuesday, the Chancellor will meet with the President of France, Emmanuel Macron.

It is also reported that Berlin was preparing to convene a meeting between Merkel and leaders of several EU countries, in the crisis of migrants, at the summit in Brussels.

Underlining the tough task facing Merkel, Welt said: “It will be a miracle if she will be the winner at the next EU summit”.
