A very strange event has occurred in international relations, for which I have no reasonable explanation.
It is about the meeting of the two most exotic of the current world leaders – US President Donald Trump and North Korean Secretary General Kim Jong-un, scheduled for June 12 in Singapore.
At this meeting, they were going to discuss ways to establish lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula and the possibility of a full normalization of relations.
Donald Trump was so sure of the success of this enterprise that the last few weeks openly demanded that the world community reward himself with his beloved Nobel Peace Prize.
In public speeches, Trump colorfully described what a strong leader he is and a wonderful negotiator. The meaning of the speeches is this: they say, first he forced Kim Jong-un to negotiate, and then got him to nuclear disarmament.
The US president noticeably swelled with pride in this achievement, forgetting about one small detail – in reality there have been no negotiations with Kim Jong-un! In a month they should take place.
The North Koreans looked at all this with suspicion, but did not mind. However, in recent days, everything has changed, and the planned meeting was in jeopardy. And Trump’s new national security adviser, John Bolton, is to blame. Or rather, his long tongue.
Usually, during constructive peace negotiations, people do not promise to catch their partner, torture him, rape him with a shovel, and then shoot and bury him in an unknown place. Bolton promised the DPRK leader to do just that.
Speaking on a television broadcast, Trump’s national security adviser said North Korea’s nuclear disarmament would follow the Libyan scenario.
For those who have forgotten what this means, let me remind you.
In the early 2000s, the United States persuaded the Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi to abandon the creation of a nuclear bomb. He believed in American security guarantees, and closed his nuclear program. Well done, of course, but! After a few years, all of the above happened to him. With US help, he was caught, raped, killed and buried. Now Bolton openly offers all the same to Kim Jong-un.
He even specified that the DPRK should give all the bombs already made, disassemble them and hand them over to the United States. Moreover, all North Korean plants for the production of enriched uranium and plutonium, as well as facilities for the construction of missiles, must be dismantled.
North Korea is a terrible country. Its leaders can rightly be blamed for so many sins. But they are certainly not clinical idiots.
The DPRK Foreign Ministry issued a statement in which he called Bolton’s words “a description of a sinister plan to turn our glorious country into Libya or Iraq, collapsed after outside interference.” Well, the logical North Korean conclusion: “Since the United States wants to drive us into a corner, demanding a unilateral renunciation of nuclear weapons, we are no longer interested in such a dialogue.” In general, they refused both a dialogue with the United States and a meeting between Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump.
For the American president, this turn of events is extremely unpleasant. He had already told everyone about the outstanding diplomatic victory! He’s already writing his Nobel speech, but here is such a setup … It’s a shame.
Journalists rushed to comment on the whole situation to Sarah Sanders, the White House spokeswoman. Sanders, apparently, wanted to say that John Bolton is just a goat who grinds all sorts of nonsense. But she was forced to remain diplomatic. Therefore, she said that Bolton’s opinion is only his opinion. But the president does not want to use the Libyan plan, but the “Trump plan” (whatever that means).
But just in case, she lied that the refusal of the North Koreans from negotiations would not be a big tragedy for her chief president. Of course it will. It’s like a child taking away gifts for the New Year and Christmas. According to my information, children in such a situation are ready for any, even the most heinous criminal crime, if only to return their toys and sweets.
There is a serious danger here. Trump in the USA is constantly called a 10-year-old boy in the body of an old man. Therefore, there many believe that the failure of the summit in Singapore threatens with two very unpleasant scenarios.
The first. Trump, by all means, decides to sign an agreement with Kim to normalize relations and will surrender his country’s long-standing and strategic interests to North Korea. Just to show fellow citizens that he knows how to conclude deals and negotiate. Such an outcome would be extremely dangerous for the regional security system, since, at a minimum, it would allow North Korea to possess nuclear weapons.
The second no less gloomy scenario. Trump is mortally offended by Kim Jong-un for refusing to negotiate. And he will announce that since the North Koreans do not want to give up nuclear weapons in a good way, they will have to do so in a bad way. Well, it will start to bomb them. And this is a nuclear war with all the unpleasant consequences.
How exactly the situation will unfold now, we, apparently, will find out closer to June. Either the DPRK and the United States resume negotiations, or begin to accelerate preparations for war.
Well, the last thing I would like to note in this whole story: the negotiations in Singapore, which will become (or will not) become a turning point in this whole story, are scheduled for June 12 – the main Russian national holiday – Russia Day. It seems to me that in this fact there is some kind of gloomy and dark symbolism. Although, maybe I’m just pumping!
