The crisis in the Sea of Azov

Now the main thing that Ukraine can do is, in my opinion, to turn to international organizations. In the case of the Sea of Azov, the use of military tools will only name the negative consequences. And the point is not that marine Ukrainian and Russian potentials are even difficult to compare. Russia specifically provokes Ukraine to actions that could justify potential aggression, which would be completely disproportionate to the military measures that Ukraine can use.

However, at the same time, this does not mean that we should not create our own naval means of protection: both transport routes and the coast. There should be a set of legal and diplomatic tools, backed up by military power.

So, we can say for sure: this way of solving the problem requires a lot of effort, patience and time. Because international organizations do not really respond instantly. There is a temptation to pay with the same coin: if Russia blocks the movement of merchant ships sailing in Ukraine – under our or other flags – answer the same. In my opinion, this is not a very far-sighted decision.

You should contact international organizations and courts – this will not give quick results, but at least creates, firstly, lower risks, and secondly – a long-term effect. And this conflict – and we all must understand this – for a very long time.

What goals does Russia pursue in the Sea of Azov? Obviously, around mid-2014, one of the key areas of Russian politics is the depletion of Ukraine.

With significant military potential, the Kremlin could launch a large-scale offensive, but they there fully understand the possible actions on the part of the international community and the resistance on the part of Ukraine. But hidden aggression and offensive, according to the Kremlin, should lead to the collapse of the Ukrainian economy and political changes in favor of Russia. The sea blockade is one of the elements of this policy, and far from the only one.

I would not say that in this way Russia seeks to escalate the situation. Most likely this is done without too much attention, because the messages that come from Russia are aimed at convincing: nothing special is happening. Like, the Kerch bridge in no way impedes the movement of ships, and Russian actions are not aggression or shock in any way, when instead of one Russian fishing vessel three Ukrainian are arrested. The opposite is true: Russia is trying to blow fog into the eyes without resorting to military rhetoric. And it is no less insidious and dangerous.

In the Sea of Azov, vacationers are attacked by poisonous jellyfish weighing 10 kilos

Large jellyfish were seen in the coastal strip of the Sea of Azov in the region of the Arabat Spit.

Vacationers complain of burns resulting from contact with jellyfish.

According to the publication, the photo shows that this is the jellyfish cornerot (Rhizostoma pulmo) – the largest jellyfish in the Black and Mediterranean Seas. Now they have appeared in the resorts of Azov.

Such jellyfish can reach 50-60 cm in diameter and weigh up to 10 kg. Poisonous stinging cells are located on the blades, but the poison does not pose a serious danger to humans. Sensitive people in contact with the oral lobes can experience severe irritation, similar to a nettle burn, which disappears in a short time.

Testing ground: the goals of Putin’s provocations in the Sea of Azov are named

The Kremlin uses Ukraine as a testing ground for testing not only its military equipment, but also methods to counter Western countries, in particular the United States.

This was told by military expert Valentin Badrak.

According to him, provocations in the Sea of Azov are aimed at achieving a number of goals by Russia.

“When we are dealing with the Kremlin, we are always dealing with a mixed version. On the one hand, the Kremlin is sensing the situation, as it were, measuring the reaction of Ukraine. And here you need to understand that any weakening of the Ukrainian side is instantly used in order to develop its success in some direction or sector. There is also an economic background, economic experts talk about the astronomical figures of our loss in turnover, which is hampered by the aggressive maritime policy of Moscow, ”Badrak said.

According to the expert, the situation with increasing tension in the Sea of Azov should also be considered from the point of view of a broader picture.

“The stage of very cool relations between the United States and Russia is forcing the Russian Federation to conduct aggressive actions where it can frighten the spans of its planes next to NATO ships. Go out with some teasing things to the Baltic region, send messages that there may be aggression against the Baltic states, and check the reaction of NATO. And, of course, the Ukrainian training ground is extremely convenient for Russia. The Russian Federation holds Ukraine as a laboratory, a testing ground for both testing its new weapons and messages to the West. In this case, I do not separate the situation of intimidation of Ukraine (including preparations for the Ukrainian elections, and Russia will have a very serious influence here) and the message to the West that, they say, “if the dialogue does not work out, we can conduct our very aggressive politics in the Ukrainian sector, ”explains the specialist.

According to him, the current weakness of Ukraine at sea, and at the same time, its efforts to correct this situation (with the help of the United States) are teasing Russia and prompting the Kremlin to act.

“It is clear that today we have problems with the ship’s staff, today even boats are not so quickly commissioned. And even the fact that we are counting on a missile “mosquito” fleet is only the future. At the same time, Russia is very teased by the situation when, for example, a training center and a marine base are being built in Ochakovo (for Ukraine, with the help of the US Navy, – ed.). A very active irritant for the Kremlin is that the Americans give us military boats. All this taken together creates quite serious irritants for the Kremlin and, therefore, forces it to take up this direction, the whole “piece” into which they are trying to bite and gnaw any gaps here, ”summed up Badrak.
