France’s “National Front” renamed “National Association”
The far-right party under the leadership of Marine Le Pen will henceforth be called the “National Association”. She is looking for a way out of the crisis after the failure of the French presidential election. At the congress of the right-populist French party “National Front” on Friday, June 1, it was decided to rename it to “National Association”. 53 percent of the party members participated in the vote, 81 percent voted to rename, said party leader Marine Le Pen.
The goal of the party rebranding, initiated by Marine Le Pen in March 2018, is to get rid of a bad reputation and renew the movement of right-wing populists after the failure of last year’s presidential election. Then Le Pen lost to Emmanuel Macron in the second round. The renaming is supposed to help expand the electoral base ahead of the European Parliament elections scheduled for May 2019.
Conflict in the Le Pen family
At the March congress of the National Front, its founder Jean-Marie Le Pen was deprived of the post of honorary chairman. Then his daughter Marine Le Pen, with whom he has been in a long-standing open conflict, was elected for the third time to the post of head of the National Front. She headed the party for the first time in 2011, having removed her father from this post.
Jean-Marie Le Pen, who will turn 90 in June, has been head of the National Front since 1972 for 39 years. In August 2015, the politician was expelled from her ranks, but retained the post of honorary chairman.
Meanwhile, the new name of the party is not entirely new, reminds AFP. In the 1980s, the French National Assembly had a parliamentary group called the National Front – National Association, led by Jean-Marie Le Pen.
