Beijing and Washington discuss preparations for Trump’s visit to China and Iran’s nuclear issue

The curator of the foreign policy bloc in the PRC government, State Councilor Yang Jiechi discussed with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the Iranian nuclear issue, as well as preparations for the visit of US President Donald Trump to the PRC.

This was stated on Friday by the official representative of the PRC Foreign Ministry Hua Chunying.

«Yesterday, October 12, State Councilor Yang Jiechi held telephone talks with US Secretary of State Tillerson. They exchanged views on bilateral relations, discussed preparations for President Trump’s visit to China in November. In addition , the discussion touched on the Iranian nuclear issue. «, — she noted.

«China believes that the JCPOA plays an important role in strengthening the nuclear non-proliferation system, as well as maintaining peace and stability in the Middle East. Beijing hopes that all parties will continue to implement this agreement,» the diplomat added.

Iran and the «six» world powers (Russia, Great Britain, China, the United States, France and Germany) reached an agreement in 2015 to resolve the problem of the Iranian atom and adopted a JCPOA. This plan provides for the lifting of the sanctions imposed on Iran. In return, Tehran pledged to limit its nuclear activities, placing it under international control.

During the election campaign, and then as President of the United States, Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized this document, claiming that it gives one-sided advantages to the Islamic Republic. Trump is expected to decide on the US withdrawal from the agreement by the end of this week.
